The obstacles on the road multiplying firefighters, the Fire Department of Montreal (SIM) intends to focus on priority traffic lights to open the way for its trucks, a system that has proven itself for over 30 years in Quebec .

“We want our vehicles can move safely and quickly. Our goal is to reach as soon as possible to the citizen in need, “says Sylvain Carrière, the SIM division leader.

Pilot project

The fire brigade has just concluded a successful pilot project near the barracks 42 in Ahuntsic-Cartierville. So-called fire “preemption” were established on the boulevards De Salaberry Canada to accelerate their response time. When the trucks activate their flashing lights, a signal is sent to the traffic lights so that they favor the passage of emergency vehicles.

Now that the pilot project is completed, the SIM wants to extend these priority fires in other arteries. A measure that truck drivers see as a good thing. “It would help. Saint-Laurent, for example, there are two ways and, with all the restaurants and shops, there is often deliveries. It often zigzagging between vehicles. It might help to circulate the flow, “said Patrick, driver of a truck scale.

Around the barracks

Preemption fires are not completely new in Montreal since the SIM already have such devices near 15 barracks. These serve only to facilitate the exit of vehicles garages and not to open them the way on congested arteries.

This is the case in the barracks 30 located at the intersection of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Laurier Avenue. The SIM has decided to implement preemptive fires due to the high number of vehicles in the area and the presence of a cycle track.
