Chad Johnson stopped 39 slices, Freddie Hamilton and Kris Versteeg scored in the first minute of play and the Calgary Flames cleared the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0 on Wednesday.
Hamilton shot a shot from reception after a pass from Michael Ferland to beat Jhonas Enroth on the side of the mitt. There were only 19 seconds left. 30 seconds later, Versteeg moved the ropes when he jumped on a throwing return.
It was the first time since March 11, 1987, against the Hartford Whalers, that the Flames scored two goals in the first minute of the game.
Johnson has started eight of the last 10 games and has maintained a record of 6-2-0, a goals-against average of 1.50 and a percentage of 951. He also won three shutouts, a career high.
Matt Stajan also hit the target for the Flames (11-13-2), who won only a fourth home game this season.
The Maple Leafs (10-9-4) shared the honors of the first two clashes of their trip to western Canada. The latter will end Saturday, while Mike Babcock’s men will be visiting Vancouver to cross the line against the Canucks.
