Authorities arrested Saturday as a suspect, 30-year-old in the murder of a deputy sheriff in Houston, Texas, has been struck by several bullets while it was full in a service station.
Darren Goforth, 47 years of age, was refueling his patrol car to 20: 30, Friday, when a man approached him and shot him dead, said the spokesman of the county of Harris, Ryan Sullivan. Mr. Goforth was not wearing his uniform at the time of the incident.
The sheriff of the county of Harris, Ron Hickman, announced Saturday night to arrest a suspect, who faces a murder charge that carries the death penalty. This is Shannon J. Miles, who already has a criminal record for resisting arrest and unlawful entry.
At the press conference, Mr. Hickman stated that the motive for the murder had not yet been established. It has, however, clarified that the investigators explored the possibility that the suspect, who is black, was motivated by anger after the murder of several Black people by white police officers in different cities in the United States.
Darren Goforth, who worked in law enforcement for ten years, is survived by his wife and two children, according to Mr. Hickman, who said he has never seen an incident if “cowardly and callous” in 45 years of service.
Earlier Saturday, the deputy spokesman for the county, Thomas Gilliland, explained that the sheriff had shown up at the gas station after being involved in a road accident.
“He put the gas in her vehicle and the suspect was placed behind him and opened fire several times. The deputy sheriff is dropped, the suspect approached him and fired several more times while he lay on the ground”, he told.
The death of Mr. Goforth has been found on the site.
