Pope Francis arrived in the US Tuesday shortly before 16 am 00 on his first visit to the country, welcomed his release from the aircraft by the Obama family as well as that of the Catholic Vice President Joe Biden.
Removing his cap because of the wind, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 78 years old and elected Pope in March 2013, put his foot on American soil for the first time in his life.
The last pope to coming to the US is Benedict XVI in April 2008. The first was Paul VI in 1965.
After a four-day trip to Cuba under the sign of reconciliation, his visit to the United States looks more delicate because it awakens the approval of a majority of Americans, but the reservations of some.
The pope will visit Washington until Thursday and will travel to New York on Friday, and finally to Philadelphia Saturday and Sunday.
He will be received at the White House Wednesday morning, before presiding over a prayer with US bishops and canonize a Franciscan missionary afternoon.
His speech before Congress Thursday is highly anticipated. In New York he preside over an ecumenical ceremony at the Memorial Wall Trade Center and cross Central Park. In Philadelphia he will close the eighth global meeting of Catholic families.
