A new national student association took shape on Saturday in Rouyn-Noranda, where several associations have come together within the walls of the Universite du Quebec en Abitibi-Temiscamingue to become one, giving way to the student Union of Quebec (ueq).
This new union brings together including associations that were members of the Fédération étudiante universitaire du Quebec (FEUQ) will disappear, and the Coalition of students and graduate students, diploma and PhD from the University of Sherbrooke (REMDUS ).
The Union will be chaired by former President of the Federation of Student Associations Campus of the University of Montreal, Nicolas Lavallée, who was elected by acclamation.
“To represent the interests of students and their condition of life, it took a credible interlocutor to talk to the government, says Mr. Lavallée. We tend to cooperate as much with it as with other players in the community. If we realize that the government wants to go against the interests of students, we will let him know for sure, but if there is way to cooperate, it will make us happy. ”
If the broad guidelines of the new association remain to be determined, the ueq nevertheless intends to push for reinvestment in higher education and research.
“There is also $ 80 million should come from the federal to increase Canadian student scholarships, since the federal government indicated that there would be a transfer to the provinces that are removed from the program, such as Quebec with Aid financière aux études. We want to ensure that students will have the right and not the sums are rendered within the province’s budget, “says the president of the ueq.
A date will be decided in the coming weeks to establish a future meeting of the members.
The Quebec Student Union currently represents over 72,000 students on six campuses in Sherbrooke, Rouyn-Noranda and Montreal.
