Alexander Semin hope to revive his career with the Canadiens, more than he is confident of achieving this. At the hearing Friday during a conference call, the Russian striker is certainly unconvincing.
“I want to try, he has just answered the question. I want to try to become the player I can be. ”
This first contact between Semin and the Montreal media was not reminiscent of laconic scrums defenseman Andrei Markov. As fellow veteran, Semin is a man of few words.
The skater from Krasnoyarsk has also confided that Markov had played a role in his decision to accept the offer from the Habs.
“Markov said,” Come with us and we will try to win the Stanley Cup, “” said Semin, hours after the conclusion of an agreement for a season with the team, at modest cost of 1, 1 million US.
Semin, a right winger aged 31, has played for the Carolina Hurricanes last season. He has earned it a meager 19 points (6-13) in 57 games while posting a return of -10 in defense. The Hurricanes redeemed his contract at the end of the season. He still had three years left and 21 million US in cash.
“I had a bad season. I have no explanation. I had surgery the previous summer. Now I look forward, “said he charged, adding not know exactly what role the Canadian will require.
Semin made it clear that he never planned to continue his career in the KHL in his country because he believes is “too young” and that “his family and prefer the NHL.”
A beautiful risk
The general manager Marc Bergevin made the bet – not very risky at this cost – that Semin can regain his touch attack. It could clog a significant dent on the right flank, the HC being free in this position after the young Brendan Gallagher. It could also be an important cog in the revival of power play.
“We are pleased to have come to a short-term agreement with Alexander Semin, Bergevin said in a statement. Alex is a natural scorer who has a very good start. We believe that his addition to our group of forwards will contribute to our offensive production and our power play. An experienced winger with good size, Alex has reached the 20-goal plateau on seven occasions since the start of his NHL career there 12 years. The commitment of Alexander with the Montreal Canadiens proves as a great opportunity for our organization and for the continuation of his career, “summarized Bergevin.
In three seasons with the Hurricanes, the striker who is six feet two inches and weighs 209 pounds has amassed 105 points, including 41 goals in 166 games.
First choice of the Washington Capitals (13th overall) in 2002, Semin had had a great season in 2012-13 with 13 goals and 31 assists in 44 games and a record 14 in defense.
During the seven seasons he spent with the Caps, he had a 40-goal campaign in 2009-10. In 635 career games, he totaled 513 points, including 238 goals. It has passed the 20-goal plateau on seven occasions and that of 30 goals twice, in 2006-07 and in 2008-09. He scored 65 goals on the power play, four shorthanded and he has to his credit 32 winning goals.
In 10 full seasons in the NHL, Semin has a differential of +70 and he served 570 minutes in penalties. He added 34 points (15 goals, 19 assists) in 51 games in the playoffs. Five of his goals were scored on the power play and four gave the victory to his team.
Internationally, Semin played for Russia at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, World Championship Junior Hockey in 2004 in Finland and five World Championships (2003, 2005 , 2006, 2008 and 2010).
