A Montrealer of 24 years was arrested last night on the dissemination of a video threats against Muslims in Quebec.
The man is suspected of being the one who promised to kill “an Arab week” to avenge the victims of the attacks in Paris.
“After a joint investigation by the Surete du Quebec (SQ) and the Police Service of the City of Montreal (SPVM), we targeted a residence Monselet Street in Montreal North,” said the publicist SPVM André Leclerc .
“Around 1 am, there were search and a man aged 24 was arrested on the spot. It is owned and met with our investigators. ”
The police added that the weapon brandished by the man in the video is not a real firearm: it would be an air pistol.
The man is scheduled to appear Wednesday at the courthouse in Montreal.
It should be charged with uttering threats, a criminal offense, but it is not impossible that much heavier charges are added, those of inciting fear of terrorism, a crime punishable by five years penitentiary and public incitement to hatred, which carries a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment.
In Quebec, the Minister of Public Safety, Pierre Moreau, reacted strongly to this case by learning the arrest of the suspect.
“Frankly, it’s a totally ridiculous attitude that must be condemned,” dropped the minister.
While recalling that “people who try to do this at home to get interesting are exposed to very high penalties,” he roundly denounced what he called the diversion of police work “that must s’ care for more serious things than that. ”
