The Surete du Quebec (SQ) announced Wednesday the deployment of a vast operation of illegal traffickers of neutralization that would have worked internationally.
Nearly 60 individuals in a highly structured criminal organization linked to outlaw motorcycle gangs and organized crime Aboriginal, were arrested. More than 70 searches have also occurred in residences and shops, mainly located in the greater Montreal, the Laurentians, Lanaudiere, Monteregie and on the Kahnawake and Six Nations, Ontario.
The survey suggests that individuals buying tobacco in the United States and illegally imported to Canada, passing through the border posts of Lacolle, Lansdowne and Fort Erie, then sell it on the Kahnawake territory and Six nations.
The head of the Investigation Service of crime against the State of SQ, Frédérick Gaudreau, the project, called MYGALE, “is the largest ever made to date in America on tobacco smuggling, but also in border crime between Canada and the United States. ”
During the investigation, significant seizures were made, including more than 52 800 kg of tobacco, accounting fraud of nearly $ 13.5 million, plus $ 1.5 million in cash from illicit transactions Canada, nearly US $ 3 million in cash, as well as cocaine, methamphetamine, cannabis and Fentanyl.
According to the SQ, the criminal organization allegedly imported into Canada at least 158 shipments – or 2,085,600 kg or 2,294 tons of tobacco – which is a fraud of more than $ 530 million for the two levels of government.
More than 700 police were mobilized for this operation.
