Closed mode and the short duration of a session of the Supreme court of the Russian Federation against Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko testify to custom-made nature of the case. This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses its decisive protest in connection with the decision of the Supreme court to leave without changes a sentence Sushchenko, according to which Ukrainians were sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in a penal colony on charges of espionage.
“The short duration of a session of the Supreme court and a hearing behind closed doors without clearance by Ukrainian and foreign diplomats and media representatives once again confirmed the custom character rigged against Roman Sushchenko case, as well as the desire of the Russian side to hide it from the world community the actual control by the Kremlin of the Russian judicial system,” – said in a statement.
The foreign Ministry demands the immediate repeal of the illegal sentence and to secure his release and return to Ukraine.
In addition, Ukraine calls on the international community, international human rights institutions to increase political and economic pressure on Russia to release and return to Ukraine Sushchenko and other citizens of Ukraine who became hostages of the Kremlin’s policy.
Today, the Supreme court rejected the appeal against the sentence Sushchenko 12 years of imprisonment. Such a sentence, according to first Deputy Parliament speaker, paving the way for the commencement of his pardon and transfer to the territory of Ukraine.
As reported, the FSB of Russia detained the journalist “UKRINFORM” Roman Sushchenko at the end of September 2016. He was accused of espionage. The lawyer said that Sushchenko threatening 20 year prison term in the case of non-recognition of their guilt. Ukraine has repeatedly asked Russia to immediately release the journalist.
We will remind, the Moscow city court on 4 June Sushchenko sentenced to 12 years in a strict regime colony. The trial in the case against the journalist was held behind closed doors, so court was announced only introductory and operative part of the judgment.
