Denis Shapovalov bows in Brisbane

Shapovalov won the first round 7-6 (5) against great Britain’s Kyle Edmund, but he lost the other two 6-7 (4), 4-6.

The Canadian Denis Shapovalov has lost his match for the first round, Tuesday, at the tennis tournament in Brisbane, Australia, while the British Andy Murray withdrew because of a problem in the hip.


Murray has made his decision after being unable to train, two days before his first competitive match since July.


“I came here with the intention to know a good start to the year, but unfortunately, my team and I believe that I am not enough healthy to play at the highest level “, said Murray in a press release.


The removal of Murray was confirmed a few hours after Garbine Muguruza, the champion at Wimbledon and favorite of the tournament, was disqualified because of leg cramps.


Muguruza collapsed on the field and received treatment to his legs before giving up in the third round against Aleksandra Krunic. The Spanish was leading 7-5, 6-7 (3), 2-1 after nearly two and a half hours of game in wet conditions at the Pat Rafter Arena.

The young athlete, 18-year-old of Richmond Hill, Ontario, began the tournament in 51st on the world ranking of the ATP, then, that Edmund was at the 50th rank.

Murray was not yet certain to be able or not to participate in the Australian open, which will begin on January 15 in Melbourne. He planned to stay a few more days in Brisbane before taking a decision.


30-year-old Murray has explained that he was still trying to recover from a problem in the right hip and that he had realized after having played a few rounds of training in Australia against some of the best players in the world that he was not fit enough to play and that he needed to reassess his situation.


“To continue my rehabilitation and give more time to my hip, recover is an option, said Murray in a post on his account Instagram. The operation is also an option, but the chances of a positive outcome are not very high and it is for this reason that it is the second option and that I hope to avoid it. “
