QUEBEC – The government Legault is ready to invest $ 17 million for the possible holding of the Games of la francophonie would take place in 2021 in Sherbrooke.

“We will support, to the tune of $ 17 million, as it had been expected by the liberals. […] It was decided that $ 17 million was an appropriate amount”, said the minister for la Francophonie, Nadine Girault, during a media scrum on Wednesday.

The City of Sherbrooke said on Monday its intention to keep the francophone Games in 2021, after the withdrawal of the Dieppe-Moncton, New Brunswick.

The City is already committed to the tune of $ 5.5 million. The international Development minister, Marie-Claude Bibeau, reiterated for his part on Monday that the federal government would pay 50 % of the invoice. The total amount for the holding of these games is not yet known.

The minister Girault believes that such games will offer a great exposure to Sherbrooke and, notably, to the two universities of the region, which could then attract foreign students.

“The economic benefits are very difficult to measure, however, it has implications at the level of leadership that can be exercised at the level of the francophonie,” she also said.
