The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko apologized for overstated expectations of Ukrainians when he said that anti-terrorist operation will last hours, not months. He said this during the ceremonial raising of the national flag in the river. The broadcast led the TV channel “112 Ukraine”.
“More than four years ago, I said that anti-terrorist operation will last hours, not months. And now it’s not so important what context these words were said, not important, and the imagery of this statement. People took it as an opportunity to end the war very quickly. I wish I had created high expectations. I sincerely apologize that gave hope that did not happen. Sorry I made a promise that did not materialize, and for that I apologise. This to me is a serious lesson of careful and responsible attitude to their words and promises,” he said.
According to the President, now the task of Ukraine is to build a strong army capable of confronting not only the Donbas, but also on the border with the Russian Federation, as well as to receive international support, which “reduce a bit the brains of the aggressor and restrain him.”
Recall that in 2014, before victory at the presidential elections Petro Poroshenko said that the ATO may not last a few months. So he called for a change in the format of the ATO.
“The ATO can’t last two months – it should last for several hours. For terrorists would not be peaceful dialogue. I will never allow such terrorist operations in Ukraine”, – said Poroshenko.
It is also worth Recalling that the format of the ATU was changed to Operation joint forces (EP) April 30, 2018. In accordance with the law, since the military operation will not be managed by SBU, and the joint operations headquarters set up by the Ministry of defence.
