Every second Russian does not know anything about the Ukrainian political prisoner Oleg Sentsov, who was illegally held in Russia, and also about their fellow citizens convicted in Ukraine for terrorism in the Donbas. This is according to the survey by the Russian Levada center.
According to the survey, almost half of Russians (49%) did not know anything about the Ukrainian political prisoners kept in Russia, and 8% were undecided. In support of the exchange of Ukrainian prisoners the Russians held in prisons of Ukraine, was supported by 24% of respondents, but 17% against the release of Sentsov and other Ukrainians. Another 4% of Russians voted to pardon exclusively Sentsov.
In turn in Moscow for the exchange of Ukrainian prisoners, the Russians made 54% of respondents, against 14%, 10% were supported only by a pardon by the Ukrainian Director. At the same time, 37% of Muscovites have not heard about the Ukrainian prisoners, and another 4% were undecided.
Among all the Russians, familiar with the situation, 54% are in favor of the exchange of political prisoners in Ukraine on the Russians, 8% support a pardon Sentsov, a 38% against the Ukrainian liberation from the prisons of the Russian Federation.
It should be noted that the total percentage of respondents “Levada-the centre” Russians is not 100% and 102%. Also not the same as the percentage of interviewed Muscovites (99%).
The survey was conducted from 23 – 30 August 2018 on a representative nationwide sample of urban and rural populations of 1,600 people aged 18 years and older, in 136 villages, 52 subjects of the Russian Federation. The study was conducted at the home of respondents by personal interview. Distribution of answers given in percentage of total number of respondents.
We will remind, the Ukrainian Ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova said that 22 inmates of the citizen of the Russian Federation wrote a letter to Putin with the request on the exchange of Ukrainian political prisoners.
As stated by the first Vice-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s representative to the Humanities subgroup of the Trilateral contact group on settling the situation in the Donbass Irina Gerashchenko, Ukraine has still not received a reply from Moscow on the Kiev’s proposal to release more than 30 prisoners of the Russians in exchange for the release of Ukrainian hostages.
