Poor diet, overweight, alcohol, tobacco. Here are some factors that can lead to high blood pressure in adults. Even though it is always difficult to find a precise cause. High blood pressure is reflected by an abnormal increase of the pressure of the blood against the walls of arteries. It can cause cardiovascular disease or strokes.
And to avoid this, two dietary approaches validated are recommended : the salt-free diet or the diet known as DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), which exists since 1997. Inspired by the diet of vegetarians, the DASH diet consists of fruits and vegetables, cereals, and dairy products. Red meat is not recommended, but replaced with poultry or fish.
A system inspired vegetarians
A study, presented at the congress of the American Heart Association, shows how combining the two can reduce excessively the blood pressure. The researchers followed 412 adults, divided into four groups, according to their systolic blood pressure (pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts and ejects the blood). These 412 adults were either salt-free diet, or the DASH diet for four weeks.
Risk of hypotension ?
The researchers found that with one or the other, the result is basically the same. A significant decrease in blood pressure. But with the two combined, the blood pressure is much lower than with a single type of plan.
More high blood pressure of the person is severe, the more his blood pressure drops. And when it is too low, then hypotension. The opposite of hypertension, which also has negative consequences such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision.
