Istanbul hosted the meeting of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill. The meeting was also attended by the members of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and to Metropolitan Emmanuel of France, responsible for the process of granting of the Tomos Ukraine. Talks between the two primates were held at the residence of the Patriarch of Constantinople in the Fanar district of Istanbul. The meeting lasted two hours and was a private.
“The questions were and to overcome schism in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian Orthodoxy. Of course, this question is already long, and all local Orthodox churches from the beginning of the split in the 92 years of the last century, concerned and worried for the fate of the Ukrainian Orthodoxy. But, as said the Patriarch after the conversation with Patriarch Bartholomew, the meeting went very well, very constructively,” – said the head of the Synodal information Department of the UOC Archbishop Clement.
Journalist Yury Molchanov convinced, the result of the negotiations will not be quick, but the important thing is that the dialogue began.
“It is naive to think that as a result of such negotiations or of these negotiations will break the deadlock, an issue as complex as the issue of Ukrainian autocephaly. A dialogue began. It can last a very long time. And God only knows how long it may last, because it touches on so many vectors of life of the Orthodox Church”, – says Molchanov.
According to Andrew, Vinichenko, due to the interference in Ukrainian Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church and other churches can stop canonical communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
“From the point of view of the norms of Canon law, which is very hard reglamentary whole life universal Catholic Orthodox Church, intervention in the opponent’s zone canonical jurisdiction is illegal. And the Patriarchate of Constantinople does not have the right to grant, even if the Ukrainian Orthodox Church would like the autocephaly of the UOC. It can be made exclusively by the mother Church,” – says the expert of the Kiev center for political and conflict studies Andrew Vinichenko.
It is reported that the Patriarch of Moscow invited the Ecumenical Patriarch to hold a scientific conference to explore the texts and sources of the question of autocephaly. In addition, the head of the Russian Church invited Patriarch Bartholomew to start a dialogue.
