Now there are favorable conditions for obtaining autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Such opinion on air of the project “a Great interview with a great politician,” expressed the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk.
“I don’t think that the events that occur in the Donbass, you need to associate with Tomos. I can say that now a prerequisite for obtaining Ukrainian Orthodox Church autocephaly is favorable. More favorable than before. I ask everyone not to say that only now the government has to act so that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church received autocephaly” – said Kravchuk.
In the opinion of the first President of Ukraine, the UOC has the right to receive the Tomos.
“The Church has the right to Tomos. These statements, which makes today the Ecumenical Patriarch, suggests that he understands deeply the situation and is doing everything in order and officially declares that the Ukrainian Church had Autocephalous status. When it will be – I don’t know. There is no need to assign date”, – he concluded.
Note that July 28, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew confirmed his intention to grant autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
We will remind, on April 19, the Verkhovna Rada 268 votes of people’s deputies supported the appeal of President of Ukraine to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on the granting of the Tomos of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Later it became known that the Ecumenical Patriarchate begins a consultation with the sister churches on the issue of granting autocephaly to the UOC.
The Council of bishops of the Church of Constantinople in Istanbul decided that the Patriarchate of Constantinople could grant autocephaly to the Church without any coordination.
We will note, the Chairman of the Synodal information-educational Department of the UOC Archbishop Clement stated that the Patriarchate of Constantinople cannot grant the Tomos of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church without an Ecumenical Council.
“It is absolutely impossible for the reason that Ecumenical Councils had adopted the creed in which we confess that we believe in one, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. That is, the Church is not some manifestation of the dictates of one of the representatives of the Church, is a community that unites all its equal members,” he explained, adding that in the history of the Church all major decisions were always made together.
“So today’s just weird to hear some statements regarding Constantinople, and that they can single-handedly decide the fate of another local Church. And, in fact, I think all this is nothing but fakes, because Constantinople has not released a single statement, a single text that would confirm it is his opinion,” he said.
