Mariupol has become the city with the most polluted air in Ukraine

The city of Mariupol in the Donetsk region. according to the index of air pollution was again in first place in the January-June 2018 among the 39 cities of Ukraine, the last – Horishni Marshes Poltava region, reports “Interfax-Ukraine” with reference to the Department information about the state of environmental pollution of the Central geophysical Observatory im. Sreznevsky.

Among the cities with high pollution levels in the first half of the current year are after Mariupol (in order of decreasing) Odessa, Lutsk, Kam’ians’ke (formerly Kiev), the Dnieper, Kiev, Nikolayev, Slavyansk, Krivoy Rog, Kramatorsk, Rubizhne, Lysychansk and Odessa.

“All these cities are estimated with a high level of pollution”, – stated in tsgo.

While the Observatory said that by the end of 2017 the level of air pollution in Mariupol and Dnipro was characterized as very high, in other cities is high.

Note that last year in the list with high levels of air pollution were in the order of decreasing Kamenskoe, Odessa, Slavyansk, Nikolayev, Lutsk, Kiev, Krivoy Rog, Kramatorsk, Kremenchug, Zaporozhye, Rivne, Rubizhne Uzhgorod.

High level of air pollution in these cities was largely because of a high content of specific harmful substances – formaldehyde, phenol, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia, from the main contaminants – frozen substances, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide.

Assessment of air pollution in cities of Ukraine was carried out from observations in 39 cities on 129 stationary posts of the state system of hydrometeorological monitoring.

The least polluted air in January-June 2018 was in such cities as Horishni Marshes, Poltava region (on 39th place), Ismail (38), Svitlovodsk (37), Chernivtsi (36) and Kharkov (35).

The waters of the Black and Azov seas and estuarine sections of the rivers were mostly polluted with oil products and phenols in some areas of the seas of the nitrogen compounds ammonium and nitrite nitrogen.

Earlier it was reported about the high level of air pollution in Kiev. In particular, on 13-14 August, the level of pollution by nitrogen dioxide reached 5 the average daily maximum permissible concentratiei in such areas: areas of Bessarabia and Demievskaya, Dovzhenko street and Victory Avenue.

The level of contamination with formaldehyde had reached 5-7,7 the average daily MPC in the following districts: streets Popudrenko, Dovzhenko, Kaunas, Obolon avenues and Victory Boulevard Lesia Ukrainka, areas of Bessarabia and Demievskoy.
