Primary school Saint-Pie X, in Magog, will get what it hoped for. A new gymnasium and additional premises will be built on the grounds of the school, which has seen its number of students climb rapidly in recent years.
The official announcement of this important investment will be made by Orford MP Pierre Reid on Wednesday at a press conference at Saint-Pie X School.
Currently, the gymnasium of the school is actually a large multifunctional room with a relatively low ceiling. Since there were not enough places for pupils’ lockers elsewhere in the school, several dozen of them were moved to this room, which also serves as a corridor to the washroom and the schoolyard.
According to information obtained by La Tribune , a library, a “specialized class” as well as a room for the daycare service would also be set up inside the school. An additional $ 500,000 would be used to modernize the on-site infrastructure and to add elements that could promote academic success.
In recent years, parents of the Saint Pius X school had expressed their dissatisfaction after finding that pupils were increasingly cramped on the premises of the Magog school. An increase in the number of children of about 30 per cent in just a few years had previously been observed.
An expansion project, including a new gymnasium, was then proposed. The school management, a group of parents and the Board of Summers worked together to achieve its goal.
The case of overcrowding had challenged the mayor of Magog, Vicki-May Hamm, as well as Pierre Reid last year. Both felt it was important that the eastern quarter of the city be equipped with a sufficiently large school. Numerous houses have been added in this sector in recent years, and there is no indication that construction will be reduced in this part of the Magogois territory.
