Patriarch Bartholomew congratulated Ukrainians with Independence Day

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in a telephone conversation with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko congratulated Ukrainians on the Independence Day. This was reported by the press service of the head of state.

“Warmest greetings to all Ukrainians, of love, of the Constantinople mother-Church,” he said.

Poroshenko also discussed with the Patriarch of the Autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Note that July 28, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew confirmed his intention to grant the Tomos of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

We will remind, on April 19, the Verkhovna Rada 268 votes of people’s deputies supported the appeal of President of Ukraine to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on the granting of the Tomos of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Later it became known that the Ecumenical Patriarchate begins a consultation with the sister churches on the issue of granting autocephaly to the UOC.

Note that since the beginning of 90-s in Ukraine there are several jurisdictions that call themselves Orthodox of the Autocephalous local churches.

The canonical status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Bessarabian Metropolitanate of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate is canonically unrecognized.

In addition, in Ukraine, there is also the unrecognized Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC).
