The attachment to the book seems to emerge in youth — childhood and adolescence —, powered by the family and the school.

That eats the drive in the winter, literally speaking ? How to choose its books ? And where to buy them ? In order to sketch some answers, the Association nationale des éditeurs de livres (ANEL) has ordered the study of The francophone reader in Canada in the digital age. The results were unveiled Thursday at the Salon du livre de Montréal, the Day of professionals.

The drive, does it quickly at the reading of this qualitative study is a creature of habits so diverse that it is difficult to track them down as to draw the portrait-robot. And a beast, quite ” classic “, which continue to prefer the paper book rather than the digital, as much for the sensuality of the object as to its sustainability.

Spring, highlighted the importance of the price of books, a major incentive to the purchase as to the choice of the place of acquisition. “The first dimension [in the occasion of the purchase] for the price, in new as in used, and this, for more than two-thirds of the people we met, we read. The choice, at the time of the place of purchase and sometimes the purchased book, is well correlated to the cost. The regularity of the low prices in some outlets also explains their attendance more regular, particularly for the sites of online sales among the users of this service. “Also,” the majority of respondents who expressed themselves on the price of digital books consider it too high, some underlining focus on books digital free “. Is it not enough, then, to take a step to imagine the advantage of a single price and, why not, a regulation of the ways to make giants in line to support the market from here ?

And for this reason, among others, libraries are expensive to readers. And it seems that they are used more as they get older. “From the age of 46, more than one-third of the respondents indicates to borrow more than they buy. “

The side how-to have a significant impact on the choice of the place of purchase — physical or online ; it speaks of proximity, simplicity, speed, and diversity of inventory offered this last criterion is also a major factor in the choice of attendance.

The digital ? Not for young people.

The digital books and their environment remain unknown, but ” it is in the 56-65 and over 66 years the rate of digital reading is the highest […] “, and the practical side of this reading comes as an advantage, even if the “explanation of non-reading in a digital format is paradoxically richer” than that of his reading. The digital book has not reached the same importance as the paper, neither in the imagination nor in the practices, and very few players serve to underline the merits of this neo-reading. And digital, free access is promoted. Among younger people, the book is seen as a great opportunity to win some screens. “In general, however, the digital reading is quite marginal […]. The digital is perceived as being less tangible, more likely to disappear than the paper book, which justifies to some the use free. “Is this where lies the future of the book ?

Waves and undertow

“Those who read the most are generally students and retirees, people reading less in general to parents and professionals. “The attachment to the book seems to emerge in youth — childhood and adolescence —, powered by the family and the school. “The 36-45 years and 46-55 years attest, in the majority, a decline in their reading,” we learn, and retirement allows a return of the pendulum, a greater engagement. All the readers are aware of the variations in their love of reading, but the causes of these waves of envy or fatigue seem to be mysterious.

The study was conducted at the national Institute of scientific research by Christian Poirier, Sylvain Martet, Éveline Favretti and Coline Sénac. 232 persons on the territory of Quebec have been encountered.

Who reads what ?

The novel predominates in more than three-quarters of respondents, with interest for the comic strip, photo books, books and specialized techniques. “The accuracy of the tastes regarding genres and themes is being carried out gradually with age,” advance the study. Thus, the majority of 18-25 year olds bed in general essays, and novels ; the 26-35 novels, essays and detective novels ; the 33-45 years of novels, histories and biographies ; the 46-55 years of recipe books and crime novels ; 45-65 years of novels and crime fiction ; and the 66-year-old and older novels and bios.
