MONTREAL – While Quebec is buried under the snow, catcher Russell Martin is already under the warm sun of Arizona to take part in the training camp of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After the physical tests carried out on Tuesday in Glendale, Martin will find himself on the field with the other catchers and the pitchers of the team this week.

“I’m preparing as if I was a guy who was going to play 150 games,” said Martin at the dawn of training camp. Like that, if I play less, I’ll be ready.

“I’m in better shape physically, has added the Quebec 35 years of age, who was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays to the Dodgers in January. For a few seasons, I had to deal with the ache in the hamstrings or my shoulder was not on point.”

Since the end of the last campaign – and even a little before -, Martin has had time to recover.

“During the last month [with the Jays], I have not even played, he recalled, who had been limited to two games at the beginning of the month of September to better give it up then to the hopes of the Blue Jays. I’ve had a season with an extra month for my body to recover. With this return to the sources in the Dodgers and the fact that I don’t want this to be my last season, it is easy to find the motivation to give it a little more.”

A duet with Jesen Therrien?

Arrived in Arizona for more than a week, Martin took the opportunity to prepare for his new equipment. It has also crossed a few instructors at Camelback Ranch, as well as various teammates, including Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager and Justin Turner.

Sunday, Martin has also shared the meal with another player that he will take him under his wing during training camp : the pitcher quebec Jesen Therrien.

“I have her in my corner, I want it to perform and I want it to be good, has noted the recipient about Therrien. I’ll take care of him, that’s for sure.”

After you have formed a duo launcher-receiver-canadian French with Eric Won it in 2006 with the Dodgers, Martin could call it 13 years later with Therrien.

“We could certainly review it,” said Martin, with a smile. It is sure that Jesen returns from an operation, Tommy John, but in the organization of the Phillies [Philadelphia], he began to have success, he moved well. This is a guy determined and he is on a mission.”

Curious coincidence : Therrien himself has had as a mentor in the recent years: a certain Eric Won.
