In its structure, “Me, Tonya” works like “Ready for anything”, Gus Van Sant, which, on the basis of a fact various, oscillates also between faux-documentary and parody of a docufiction.

It was in 1994. Media serious newspapers and gossip had for her : Tonya Harding, the u.s. champion skating in 1991 and silver medallist at the world Championships the same year. Attention having, however, nothing to do with his accomplishments in sports, but rather with an attack woven by her spouse against her rival, Nancy Kerrigan. Posted on January 5, the film of Craig Gillespie’s Me, Tonya is back on the case by laying on it, and on the involvement of Harding, a look of fiercely satirical.

Since its unveiling at the international film Festival of Toronto this fall, the excitement around Me, Tonya (I, Tonya) does not disappoint. Margot Robbie, who plays a Tonya Harding pugnaceet oddly endearing, and Allison Janney, who made up a character of a mother unworthy unforgettable, are both assured of a nomination for the Oscar.

“Margot and Allison were already involved in the project when it was proposed,” says Craig Gillespie, director of australian origin who, after years of controls hollywood little memorable like Mr. Woodcock (Mr. Woodcock) and The glory (The Finest Hours), is to be found in this independent production, the best film of his career.

“When I read it, the screenplay by Steven Rogers I was immediately excited because the black humor and the tone was satirical there were already very well developed. “

Conflicting Versions

In its structure, Me, Tonya works as Ready to do anything (To Die For), Gus Van Sant, which, on the basis of a fact various, oscillates also between faux-documentary and parody of a docufiction. And Gillespie reconstructs the journey of personal and professional hectic of Tonya Harding, punctuating the action of the testimonials to the camera, to be delivered by the female fallen, her mother, her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan), his old coach (Julianne Nicholson), etc.

“Steven has built his screenplay around interviews he conducted for two days with Tonya Harding, then with his eg, which was fascinated to the point of becoming its angle of approach, it is this observation that both of them, to this day, continue to give versions of the facts are radically opposed. “

One of Harding has not changed since 1994. The Gilloly, who admitted to have orchestrated the assault with his friend Shawn Eckhardt, on the other hand has… evolved. Starting from the question ” who benefits from the crime ? “and the grip tightened quickly on all this beautiful world, at the time. However, it is on Harding, only that they levelled the spotlight.

This is the first thing that she asked Margot. How was I going to make violence ? This was supposed to be brutal ; it was necessary that the violence is sudden and raw, that it hurts. Because it is shocking. And it provides one of the main keys to understand Tonya Harding, its hardness.

This, in spite of that, technically, she had nothing instigating or perpetrating : it is a chief obstacle to justice, she pleaded guilty. The evidence of his complicity in the conspiracy remained circumstantial. And in fact, the film delivers a clear cause, the treatment of Harding compared to that granted to his ex, her boyfriend and their minions.

In this regard, the ineptitude with which the attack was fomented gives rise to many laughs scratchy.

Screech at the discomfort

In this case, the violence is very present in the film, beginning with the one that Tonya Harding lived in the hands of Jeff Gillooly. In these moments, the smile freezes as the growing discomfort.

“This is the first thing that she asked Margot,” recalls Gillespie. How was I going to make violence ? This was supposed to be brutal ; it was necessary that the violence is sudden and raw, that it hurts. Because it is shocking. And it provides one of the main keys to understand Tonya Harding, its hardness, the fact that she is always on the defensive. It was similar with his mother. The two people who she wanted to be loved beat her up. It is in there it is docked. It would have been dishonest not to show it. “

If he throws a new light on the scandal and critical of the manner in which it was covered, the film does not spare Tonya Harding. Ultimately, however, it feels a net bias towards it.

In 1994, the public soon get an idea, the media having office served a protagonist virtuous, Kerrigan, and an antagonist monstrous, Harding, ready-to-eat. Opting for the way subversive, Me, Tonya offers another reading of this story.

To conclude Craig Gillespie : “The line was thin. We didn’t want to laugh at these people, but rather the absurdity of some aspects and the side tragicomique that emanates from it all the years after. There is also under there is a pain quite real that we wished to discuss. “

And that may have been obscured until now.
