The Museum of journalism and news in Washington, DC (USA), also known as the Newseum, withdrew from the sale of souvenir t-shirts with the inscription “You – false news” (You Are Very Fake News), who sparked outrage in social networks. This was reported by press service of the Museum.
“The Newseum has removed t-shirts You Are Very Fake News from the gift shop and online store. We made a mistake and ask for forgiveness. Free press is an integral part of our democracy, and journalists are not enemies of the people”, – stated in the message of the Museum.
The inscription on the t-shirt is a reference to the President of the United States Donald trump, who similarly described by CNN in July of this year. While interacting with journalists during his visit to Britain the head of state refused to answer a reporter’s question of the media and said: “CNN is fake news, I won’t be taking questions from CNN”. Trump and his supporters often accused of criticizing the policy of the White house press misrepresentation, and the President himself once called journalists enemies of the people.
It is worth noting that in the gift shop of the Museum there are constantly news items with slogans and quotations from the incumbent. Thus, the site of the Newseum is still possible to buy a cap that says Make America Great Again (“Again make America great”) – campaign slogan of trump.
Once social networks started to criticize the new t-shirt Museum of news, the head of his press service Sonia Gavanka stated that the term fake news (“fake news”) has become part of popular culture and is often used as a “satirical reproach”.
However, fake news lately as one of the key problems of journalism. Unverified sensational information spreads very quickly through social networks and can significantly affect attitudes. The so-called fakes, and stuffing are also considered to be the elements of hybrid war. In particular, the Russian “Troll factory” (presumably associated with the Kremlin, the organization that was paying bloggers for posts and comments in Facebook) is considered one of the factors of interference in a victory for trump’s U.S. presidential election. So, after the scandal with the transfer of Facebook user data to a third party who used the information to interfere in the electoral process, the social network has introduced moderation for suspect publications. Now any user can submit a request for validation of any records.
The Washington Newseum is a unique Museum, which brings together all the key news of the world. It aims to give visitors an understanding of the importance of a free press and freedom of speech in General. On the facade of the Museum is carved the text of the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution: “Congress shall make no law regarding the establishment of any religion or proscribe the freedom of any religion, or abridging the freedom of speech and of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to request the government to stop abuse”. In addition, the Museum building is an obelisk, on which is carved the names of more than 1,800 journalists from around the world who died in the line of professional duty. Each of the visitors to the Museum can try yourself in the role of reporter and news editor.
