Danish scientists have found that loneliness increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in half.

During the new study, which involved more than 13 thousand people, medics from the Royal National hospital in Copenhagen found that the feeling of loneliness is a harbinger of premature death. They analyzed data on physical and mental health of the respondents and also studied their responses to the question about the level of social support. In particular, study participants were asked: “Do you have someone you can talk to when you need it?” And “Do you have moments when you feel alone though you are by yourself?”.

“Loneliness is more prevalent today than ever – more and more people in modern society live alone. Previous studies have shown that loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of developing coronary heart disease and stroke, and our study confirmed these data”, – said the author of the study Anne Vinggaard Christensen.

In addition, the doctors found that both men and women who feel lonely, three times more likely to suffer from depression, panic attacks and anxiety. Single people also noted a lower quality of life overall, the study authors added.

“Loneliness is a harbinger of premature death, deteriorating mental health and a lower quality of life, especially in patients with cardiovascular disease. This applies to both men and women”, – said the authors of the study.
