Turkey is appealing to the WTO to increase duties on U.S. Turkish goods

Турция обжалует в ВТО повышение пошлин США на турецкие товары

Turkey plans to appeal the decision of Washington on increase of duties on Turkish steel and aluminium in the world trade organization. This was stated by the Minister of trade of the country Ruhsar Pekcan in Ankara, reports Anadolu Agency.

“Turkey has invited US to the panel of arbitrators of the world trade organization. Invitation sent at 17:40 (local time), and already obtained the American side. Thus, we have initiated litigation in the WTO”, – said the head of Department.

Ruhsar Pekcan reminded that Ankara responded to the limitations of Washington’s increase of fees in the amount of 533 million dollars, increasing tariffs on imports of 22 kinds of American goods.

We will remind that the President of the United States Donald trump on 26 July this year threatened to impose sanctions against Turkey if the Turkish authorities released pastor Andrew Brunson, he is accused of support for the military coup of 2016. He faces up to 35 years in prison. Ankara priest was not released.

Trump announced on August 10 that the US doubled import tariffs on aluminium and steel from Turkey, setting them respectively 20% and 50%. On the same day, the Turkish Lira started to depreciate against the dollar. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged people to donate dollars and euros to support the Turkish Lira. Also, Erdogan announced a boycott of American electronics. After Ankara said it would not use items from the U.S. in construction.
