President Petro Poroshenko and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew signed the agreement “About cooperation and interaction between Ukraine and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople”. About it reported in a press-service of the Ukrainian President.
The agreement on cooperation in the establishment of an independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine, the Ecumenical Patriarch provides a Tomos recognizing the independence of the Ukrainian Church, and gives his elect at the Cathedral the Primate.
The Ukrainian head of state stressed that today is a historic day for establishment of an independent Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, because today was the signing of the agreement on the establishment of an independent Ukrainian Church.
“The agreement we signed today creates all the conditions for the preparation process to the Cathedral, the process of granting of the Tomos was given in absolutely strict accordance with the canons of the Orthodox Church. I congratulate you with the signing of this Agreement. I want to emphasize that 3 November is a historic day for the creation of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church”, – said Poroshenko.
“Today is a historic day. A historic day that was started from the first days of restoration of independence of Ukraine, when Ukrainians sought and prayed that the Lord sent them independent of one local Autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church”, – the President added.
“I urge Ukrainians to pray for peace, for unity of the Ukrainian Church. Pray that the Lord will not allow provocations that seek our enemies, that the Lord would not allow blood. And we will do everything possible to ensure that as soon as possible to finalize the procedure for the granting of the Tomos of the Ukrainian Church His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew,” said the head of state.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew also stressed that today is an important historic moment for bilateral relations, but also for Orthodoxy in General.
“We have just signed a cooperation agreement between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Ukraine, and this agreement will help to expedite the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine”, – said Patriarch Bartholomew.
His Holiness said: “It is right to have an Autocephalous Church, and this desire you have had for many years, these days.”
“As this right had other peoples of the Balkans, which received autocephaly from the Mother Church. It is the exclusive right of the Mother Church to grant autocephaly, when it considers it appropriate, when all the conditions are ready for this process,” stressed the Ecumenical Patriarch.
He is convinced that the decision of autocephaly will lead to the unity of all Orthodox in Ukraine, because 30 years later they separated.
“The new Autocephalous Church to unite all Orthodox believers in Ukraine. And this new Church will be included in the family of Orthodox churches. And we all will work together for the benefit of our believers and to the glory of God’s name,” said Patriarch Bartholomew.
