The UN General Assembly elected Ukraine into the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSAR) for the period from 2019 to 2021.
Ukraine’s membership in ECOSAR supported by 176 States, reports “UKRINFORM”.
“For Ukraine the membership in ECOSAR will facilitate the implementation of global best practices in the field of socio-economic reforms. We also plan to more actively use the potential of the UN to address the urgent humanitarian problems”, – said after the procedure of election of the permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko.
ECOSAR is one of the six key organs of the UN, which is responsible for coordinating the activities of the UN and its specialized agencies in the economic and social spheres. It is empowered, in particular, to convene a special session on emergency situations of a humanitarian nature.
The Council consists of 54 member States of the UN.
In 2019, ECOSAR will focus on “promoting equitable and inclusive society, in particular gender equality and strengthening the social protection of people with special needs, improvement of the humanitarian situation in conflict areas, supporting small and medium enterprises, combating climate change”.
The last time Ukraine was elected in a composition of ECOSAR for the period 2010-2012.
Earlier Ukraine lodged with the Court of justice the evidence against Russia.
