In Edmonton, the capital of the canadian province of Alberta opened the Consulate General of Ukraine. The ceremony was attended by Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin, reports the press service of the Ministry.
“This is a landmark event. Ukraine recognizes the special role played by the Ukrainian community in Western Canada, and also opens the door to trade and investment contacts,” – said the Minister.
After the opening ceremony of the institution Pavlo Klimkin congratulated the first visitor of the Consulate – year-old Danilo, who issued a document on the citizenship of Ukraine.
In the province of Alberta is home to more than 350 thousand Canadians of Ukrainian descent. The newly established Consulate General will serve other provinces in Western Canada – Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the Yukon and Northwest territories.
“This is a pragmatic decision: it is based on geography and on the powerful business potential that exists in Alberta. But it’s an emotional decision: we return the debt to the Ukrainians of the Prairies, who spent generations building up Canada, keeping the dream of an independent Ukraine,” – said the Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada Andriy Shevchenko.
Consulate General in Edmonton was the first that the Ukraine was opened after the beginning of the Russian aggression. By this time in Canada, worked for the Ukrainian Embassy in Ottawa and Consulate in Toronto.
Previously Klimkin said that Canada will provide Ukraine more than $ 7.5 million for humanitarian assistance.
Before that Poroshenko has discussed with the foreign Minister of Canada, the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass, and also noted the important role of Ottawa in the promotion of the UN resolution on human rights in Crimea.
