On the occasion of 10-th world humanitarian day the United Nations urged to take immediate measures to protect millions of civilians of Ukraine affected as a result of active hostilities in the East of the country. This is stated in the statement of the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian Affairs.
The UN resident coordinator in Ukraine and the humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, the sons Lubrani filed an urgent request to increase the support of the international community to extend the necessary humanitarian assistance to meet the significant humanitarian needs of the residents of Donbass.
“I am deeply concerned that millions of Ukrainian men, women and children living around 450-kilometer line of contact facing the threat of shelling and sniper fire and the risks associated with a large number of mines and ammunition that did not explode”, she said.
Lubrani also noted that although she was confident that this important work of the humanitarian community will continue required to immediately increase funding to major humanitarian needs in the East of Ukraine was completely satisfied.
“I have a concern that the financing of the humanitarian response provided less than a third of the required amount,” – said Lubrani.
According to the UN, on the fifth year of the crisis in the East of Ukraine more than 3 thousand civilians – men, women and children – were killed, and more than 9 thousand were wounded. More than 3.4 million people face difficulties obtaining food, access to water, housing, health services and education that deepens the vulnerability of their position and depletes the ability of restoring viability.
