The circulation of motorcycles will be prohibited from 2030 in the urban areas of the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi.
A resolution passed on Tuesday said the measure will reduce congestion on the road network as well as air pollution in the region populated by about 7.5 million people.
There are about 5 million motorcycles and 500,000 cars in the metropolitan area of Hanoi.
Defective public transport
During discussions on this project to ban motorcycles in the Vietnamese capital, there was strong opposition from the population. For many, these vehicles are the main means of locomotion in a city where public transport is deficient.
The authorities say that the ban on motorcycles in 13 years will be accompanied by measures to improve public transport. Two train circuits are currently under construction and their entry into service is expected to take place in a few years.
